Conflict and consequences: The United Nations’ role in mediating the Israel-Iran tensions

by Analysis Desk November 18, 2024 0 Comment

On Wednesday, during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, both Iran and Israel exchanged threats. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, emphasized the importance of ending this conflict. He says that time is running out. This meeting was held to discuss Israel’s attack on ‌the leader of Hezbollah. It is a group based in Lebanon. The meeting also followed Israel’s ground operation against Hezbollah. In response to his killing of the Hezbollah leader, Iran fired missiles at Israel.

Danny Danon, Israel’s UN ambassador said Israel has the power to protect itself, however, Iran should be ready to face the severe consequences of its actions.

Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saied Iravani said the missile strike was meant to bring things back to normal. He also said that more conflict could be avoided if Israel stopped its military actions in Gaza and its attacks on Lebanon. This situation highlights the importance of the urgent need for peace and stability in the region.

Iran says it is prepared to protect its interests, land, and rights from Israel’s illegal attacks and military threats. Iran will take any possible and legal step to stop Israel’s violent actions in Gaza and Hezbollah. It shows that Iran has strong military power and the nation wants to know how to use it against the enemy to defend itself.

The US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, stated that United States stands with Israel and supports its right to be safe. Iran should stop attacking otherwise, the nation must be held responsible for its actions. Iran should target the US or Israel again.

French UN Ambassador Nicolas de Riviere said the UN Security Council must work together on these ongoing issues and bring peace to the regions. It means in this hard time, there is a need for different countries’ cooperation. Thomas Greenfield spoke against Iran’s actions. He suggested that the UNSC should punish ‌Iran’s military group, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, for their aggressive behavior. Both the US and Israel are asking for sanctions against Iran to deal with these growing threats and to help bring peace to ‌the area.

Guterres opposed ‌Iran’s action against Israel. But Israel’s foreign minister said Guterres could not be permitted to enter the nation because of his comments. Russia’s UN Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, praised Iran for being restrained and noted that the missile attack on Israel should not be seen alone. He highlighted that for many years, Gaza has been suffering a lot. If the situation continues, then it will lead to a larger conflict in the Middle East.
