It’s time to end the conflict and thinks about what comes after the war in Gaza
The current president of the United States introduced Israel’s new peace plan for the Middle East. The announcement of this plan was made on 31st May. It is a significant step and should be supported by many. Many aspects of the plan are not clear such as who will be in charge of Gaza after the war ends. President Joe Biden also did not mention the two-state solution. In the plan there is no point that guarantees Israel’s safety.
It is high time that Israel and the United States consider what happens after the conflict, a topic they have avoided so far.
It will be costly for Israel to control Gaza for the long term. Furthermore, it also has a great impact on lives, money and reputation. Hamas also should not have a future role. The Palestinian Authority is also not strong enough. It will also not be supported enough to govern Gaza.
In order to find the solution, help from the International Community is needed. However, getting the United Nations Security Council to agree on a clear plan is difficult. Even if they do agree, the plan might be complicated and not work well.
One of the solutions is that the United Nations take charge of Palestine. For the implementation of this idea, all countries of The United Nation should work together to make Palestine an independent and self-governing country. The main purpose is to respect the Palestinian thoughts and what the people of Palestine want.
Proper management team is required for the execution of this plan such as a special UN group and the General Assembly. Their job would be to build up Palestinian institutions to prepare for a future Palestinian state within a set period of time, with the approval of the Palestinian people. Different countries also play an important role in this idea. Saudi Arabia and Jordan would help to manage this effort. The main focus is to strengthen the Palestinian Authority. If the aim is to create a separate Palestinian state, the West bank in this plan must be included.
The trusteeship system is one of the International setups that handle this matter very well. It also did its job very well in the past. According to past information, it managed 11 trust territories. These territories became independent in Africa and the Pacific within 10 to 15 years. Same process would be quicker for Palestine.
The Trusteeship Council is one of the six main parts of the United Nations, along with the General Assembly and the Security Council. It has been inactive since 1994, when Palau, the last trust territory, became independent. The Trusteeship Council could be reactivated if the Security Council or General Assembly requests it, to provide international oversight and support Palestine’s journey to becoming a state.
The Security Council was not the resistance in the implementation to this plan. For help in rebuilding, the 5 permanent members will join the Trusteeship Council. One of the main points in this plan is Israeli security. It also addresses complications like Jewish settlements in the West Bank and the future of UNRWA (the UN agency for Palestinian refugees). It will likely gain worldwide support.
A UN trusteeship will help to resolve the issue between Israel and Saudi Arabia. It will also lead to a two-state solution and bring peace.
Furthermore, different nations will work together and show strong leadership for this strategy. It is good to form a group in order to manage diplomatic strategies. Key players in the region, especially Saudi Arabia, should play a central role in this effort.
Canada can also play a key role in this situation. This nation is a strong friend of Israel and recently showed a balanced approach at UNGA. In order to support the idea of UN trusteeship, Canada could be a bridge. It helps to bring together relevant governments, civil society groups, and international organizations.
Furthermore, the United Nation General Assembly has been serious about the issue of Gaza. With growing international pressure to find a solution, even the Netanyahu government’s expected resistance to a trusteeship plan might be overcome, especially if the United States backs it.
Creating a clear path to a two-state solution and ending conflict is necessary now. To achieve the goals, UN trusteeship is a proven method that brings peace across the world.
