Mahmoud Abbas, President of Palestine request UNSC for urgent meeting

by Analysis Desk June 14, 2024 0 Comment

The media is reporting that Mahmoud Abbas, President of Palestine has told Palestin’s representatives at the United Nation for an urgent meeting of the UNSC (United Nation Security Council). The meeting is held to discuss the recent Israel attack on central Gaza. They also want to tighten the security to the areas that were hit on Saturday.

According to the statement of Manipur police, “The situation is tense but under control in the wake of violent disturbances that broke out in Jiribam district in which miscreants torched two police pickets, a forest beat office… and several houses belonging to both Meitei and Kuki communities.”

A senior police officer reported that more than 70 houses were burned down  in Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal, and Begra villages.

All police departments are also watching the different social media posts that could stir up tension between communities. They are asking everyone to not share unverified information or stop making rumors.

Jiribam is a state that is suffering from ethnic ongoing tensions. Violence broke out here on Thursday. This happened after the murdered of a 59-year-old man. The suspected militants killed that person.

The victim, Soibam Saratkumar Singh, went missing on June 6 while he was at his farm. Later, his body, which had wounds from a sharp object, was found. This was according to an official.

In another incident, an angry mob stopped a truck at Sorok Atingbi Khunou late on Saturday. They reportedly set fire to essential goods that the truck was carrying, as reported by a police officer.

According to him, “ A contingent of more than 70 state police commandos was airlifted from Imphal to Jiribam to assist security personnel in their operations against militants.”

According to officials, Approximately 239 Meitei people were evacuated from the outskirts of Jiribam. Mostly women and children are included in it. A new relief camp was established at a multi-sports complex in the district for them. And they were relocated there.

The state government has reassigned Jiribam’s top cop, A Ghanashyam Sharma, to a new position at the Manipur Police Training College. This change was officially announced by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms.

The transfer happened right after several serious cases of arson. Early Saturday morning, a few police outposts, like those at Jiri Mukh and Choto Bekra, as well as the Goakhal forest beat office, were set on fire.

The timing suggests that the government’s decision to move Sharma could be connected to these incidents. It might be a response to the events, or it could be an effort to bring in new leadership to manage the affected areas. Such actions are often taken to address and calm down situations within the police force or the community after major disruptions.

Angomcha Bimol Akoijam responded to the new outbreaks of the violence. He was recently elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Inner Manipur area. According to him, in order to protect the lives of people living in Jiribam, the government takes strict action. He also emphasized the police departments to make sure about the safety of people at their homes and communities. Also the protection of their properties is the responsibility of the police department.

His statement reflects a concern for the wellbeing of his constituents and underscores the importance of government intervention during times of unrest. Essentially, Akoijam is calling for immediate measures to prevent further harm and to restore peace in the affected area. This appeal for action demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing the consequences of violence and prioritizing the protection of citizens’ lives and possessions.

Jiribam is a mixture of 6 different ethnic groups. It includes Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and others. It also had not been affected by the ethnic conflict happening in the northeastern state since May last year.

The fighting between the Meiteis, who live in the Imphal valley, and the Kukis, who live in the hills, has sadly resulted in over 200 deaths and left thousands of people without homes.
