The United State aim to hijack the Chinese human rights

by Analysis Desk May 21, 2024 0 Comment

China claimed that the US has been placing more and more sanctions on this country since 2017. The United States controls exports and also charges against different Chinese tech companies. If we talk about Xinjiang and Hong Kong then the US has also added restrictions on it. These measures badly impact the crucial economic sectors such as agriculture, construction, trade, green technologies, energy, finance, and telecommunications.

According to the United Nation statement all of these sanctions are illegal and don’t follow international law. It is also said that these are not justified as legal countermeasures. It badly harms the human rights of the Chinese people, as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Furthermore, the US has placed these sanctions to force China to fulfill their demands.

Alena Douhan, a UN expert on sanctions and human rights, said at a news conference in Beijing on Friday that it is important for countries like the US to stop their one-sided sanctions against China. She also urged these countries to take strong steps to prevent businesses and others under their control from overly complying with these sanctions. Douhan made these statements after completing a 12-day official visit to China.

“A drop in business activities and losing global markets because of sanctions or extra caution by foreign businesses has caused job losses. This disrupts social protection programs, hitting the most vulnerable people the hardest, especially in labor-intensive jobs. Women, older people, and those in informal employment are particularly affected,” Douhan said.

According to Douhan, these sanctions have a bad impact on the business market and cause job losses. All of this due to the extra caution by foreign businesses. Nor only the business market but it also disrupts the social protection programs, hitting the most vulnerable people the hardest, especially in labor-intensive jobs. Additionally, Women, older people, and those in informal employment are particularly affected.

Not only business sectors but educational departments are also listed under these sanctions. It negatively impacts the Chinese educational and academic corporations. Different Chinese research centers and Universities are also destroyed due to these sanctions. It also disrupts exchange programs, scholarships, and joint research projects with foreign institutions, especially those in the US and Europe. Additionally, Chinese students and scholars face broader stigmatization, often being denied entry visas or subjected to extensive background checks for alleged national security reasons.

Moreover, as Douhan noted, the process of adding or removing people and groups from sanction lists harms basic rights like fair legal treatment and the presumption of innocence. Those who are designated do not get to see the evidence against them and have very limited ability to challenge the sanctions in court. The legal processes in sanctioning states are often slow, expensive, unclear, and inefficient.

Furthermore, the US uses the protection of human rights in Xinjiang or Hong Kong as a reason to impose sanctions on China. However, these sanctions have actually harmed human rights in China and could cause problems for people in other parts of the world too. Despite this, China can reduce some of the negative effects of these sanctions.

Before the UN experts scheduled the news conference in Beijing, the United States made an announcement. According to them, 26 more Chinese cotton traders and warehouses were added to the US Entity List. All of this was done due to the human rights issues in  Xinjiang.

This announcement, made on Thursday, appears to be a provocative move aimed at the UN expert, Alena Douhan, who has previously criticized the US for its actions against countries like Venezuela, Iran, and Zimbabwe. The timing of this decision suggests a direct response to Douhan’s visit to China.

In September, the report on China will be presented to the United Nation Human Rights Council  based on the Douhans visit. It calls for stopping all sanctions imposed on China by the United State without the permission of United Nation Security Council authorization.

This might not change the US stance on its coercive actions towards China, but it will show the international community how wrong these actions are.

The United States is using human rights issues for a political purpose that is shameful.
