What is the next move of Palestine against Israel at the UNGA?
The Palestinian Authority is making a plan related to presenting a resolution at the United Nations. They ask countries across the world to separate their dealings with Israel from their actions in the occupied territories, especially the West Bank. This proposal will be presented during the first week of the 70th United Nations General Assembly. It starts on the 10th of September.
The main purpose of this resolution is to enforce the ruling from the International Court of Justice (ICJ). According to it Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem are against international laws. The Palestine Authorities want different countries to cut their ties with Israel and stop dealing with them. Also, they want to prevent trading with Israel in the West Bank and not sell weapons to Israeli security because these weapons are only used to kill many innocent people in Palestine.
In addition, the resolution will push for the official recognition of a Palestinian state. It will also seek to ensure that the construction of Israeli diplomatic offices in these occupied territories does not result in international recognition of Israel’s control over these areas. This move by the Palestinian Authority shows their determination to gain more international support and to challenge Israel’s actions in the occupied territories.
Palestinians have aimed to ask the United Nations to ensure that all actions of Israel are according to the well-defined international laws. It includes all those rules related to humanitarian rights and the protection of civilians. They believe it is important for Israel to never violate international rules, especially in how to treat the people in Palestine.
To further this goal, the Palestinians also want Switzerland to organize a meeting with all the countries that have signed the Geneva Conventions, which are international agreements designed to protect people in times of conflict.
The aim of this meeting is to discuss different ways to ensure that Israel is responsible for the result if it breaks any law. Also, the proposal proposed by Palestinians is expected to include a clear time frame for ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. It is also expected that the proposal also includes the two-state solutions. According to it both Israel and Palestine would exist as independent and peaceful neighbors.
Additionally, the Palestinian Authority is considering including a clause that would require Israel to pay compensation to Palestinians for any damages or harm caused by the occupation. This comprehensive plan is intended to push for a fair resolution that upholds international law and respects the rights of Palestinians.
It also seems like Jerusalem will vote on the proposal. The date for this action is between September 10 to September 24. The second week of September is the most probable time for voting. It is also expected that many voters will stand in favour of the proposal. However, in its early stages, it is not anticipated to have significant effects or major consequences for Israel. While the vote will likely go through smoothly, the initial impact of the proposal might be quite limited.
In the last month, the International Court of Justice has made a clear announcement about Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories. It also includes the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The leader of the Court, Judge Nawaf Salam also strongly criticized Israel’s action. This person also spent 1.5 hours outlining his opinion related to the Israeli occupation. He made it clear that this action of Israel is illegal. He also said that the actions in the West Bank are basically seen as an annexation.
