Ceasefire needs enforcement: Security Council support lacking

by Analysis Desk June 22, 2024 0 Comment

It is big news to know that the United Nation Security Council passed a resolution in order to bring peace and stop war. It would be good news for those living in Palestine, where  Israeli military attacks, mass graves, and starving civilians almost daily. But many countries across the world have been silent after listening to it, such as New York. It doesn’t seem like the violence will stop soon. Both Israelis and Palestinians continue to suffer, including the hostages and prisoners of war.

When thinking about Gaza then two different sides come into mind. One is what diplomats and meditors discuss in secret. And the others are the harsh realities on the ground. The US is the nation that strongly supports Israel. President Joe Biden’s plan for a ceasefire is the only one supported by his government. This announcement is the sign that something could happen. It may not be perfect but it’s the start of a good time.

However, there are still many unclear questions. If this proposal of Biden is to become the real action, they can not be ignored for long. One of the questions is whether Israel has agreed to accept Mr.Biden’s plan. According to the resolution, The President of Israel has already agreed to the terms. These include, as Mr. Biden explained in a speech on May 31st, a temporary ceasefire for at least six weeks, during which mediators would help secure the release of some hostages.

Israeli forces would also withdraw from populated areas. And Palestinian civilians would receive aid. Successful negotiations, covering various details, would allow for a move to phase two, which is a permanent end to hostilities.

On Monday the United nation Security Council held a meeting. In this meeting  Israel’s UN representative Reut Shapir Ben Naftaly said that war will continue until Hamas freed all the hostages. And also Hamas’s military and government abilities are taken apart.

In the speech, Mr. Biden did not mention about wiping out Hamas. He said Israel had already taken steps that weakened the Hamas forces. Also now it is difficult for Hamas to launch another big attack as did on October 7.  He also warned that continuing an endless war for ‘total victory’ won’t free Israeli hostages or permanently defeat Hamas.

Many people are unsure if the Security Council’s decisions are being enforced. These decisions are meant to be legally binding, but countries, such as Israel, often ignore them without facing any consequences.

The United Nation is one of the important global organizations. But recently many people observed the growing gap between its decision regarding war and what actually happens in conflict zones like Gaza. If the UN dont make sure that these decisions are carried out then this organization loses much of its impact. So here the question arises that the UN really plays an important role in global conflicts.

The lack of enforcement mechanisms  weakens the credibility and impact of these resolutions, making it difficult for the UN to maintain global peace and security. This gap shows the need for better measures to turn UN decisions into real actions in conflict zones.

People have very different concerns in another part of the world. In this portion of the world the violence and displacement are very common. In Jordan there was a big international meeting held. The theme of the meeting is to discuss the huge humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Night raid of Israel took the lives of more than 200 people in a few seconds.

The purpose of this attack is to save its four hostages.  At the same time, hunger is still a big problem because the World Food Programme announced it would stop delivering food through a pier built by the US due to security reasons.

So, this disaster makes the Israeli leaders confused. After all of this,  nothing is more important than to bring peace across the world. Sooner or later, these separate paths will need to join and work together.
