Iran denounces U.S. threats at U.N., rejects accusations of destabilizing activities
In a statement to the United Nations Security Council, Iran alleged that the U.S. president and other officials were making reckless and provocative statements about Tehran and threatening force.
“Iran strongly and categorically rejects any accusation on the violation of relevant Security Council resolutions on arms embargoes in Yemen or involvement in any destabilizing activities in the region,” Iran’s U.N. Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said in a letter.
In Iran, anxiety and disinformation are rampant as President Donald Trump’s recent threat of a military strike raises fears of war. Trump cautioned that he would hold Iran and its leaders accountable if their Houthi allies responded to the multiple US air strikes targeting the Tehran-supported group.
The ultimatum came after the hawkish president demanded the week prior that Iran accept a new nuclear deal or risk an attack. Official media quickly dismissed unfounded reports spreading on social media Monday night, claiming that the US military had sunk Iran’s reconnaissance ship, the Zagros, in the Red Sea. On Tuesday, Saberin News, a Telegram channel with nearly a million followers and reportedly linked to the Revolutionary Guards, refuted claims about any Iranian navy ships being present in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, or the Indian Ocean.
According to experts, Trump might be preparing for military action against Iran should negotiations break down. This could happen if Iran refuses to participate, shows inflexibility during discussions, or if IAEA chief Rafael Grossi’s June report indicates that Tehran is significantly progressing with its nuclear program.
Mostafa Najafi, a pro-government Iranian analyst and university lecturer, stated in a Monday post on X that the United States has communicated a backchannel message to Iran, urging the withdrawal of its military and intelligence vessels from the Red Sea along with a deadline for compliance.
Najafi notes that Iran has issued warnings via its UN mission and military channels about any American aggression toward its positions and interests assets.”
During the UN Security Council meeting, Iran’s ambassador Amir-Saeid Iravani criticized Trump’s statements as reckless and provocative, cautioning that any aggression towards Iran might lead to serious repercussions for global peace and security.
“Iran strongly and categorically rejects any accusation on the violation of relevant Security Council resolutions on arms embargoes in Yemen or involvement in any destabilizing activities in the region,”
Iravani said.
Iran and the Houthis have refuted claims of direct military collaboration, yet weapons analysts have connected the advanced anti-ship and ballistic missile capabilities of the Yemeni fighters to Iranian technology. For years, Iran has showcased the Houthis as a key element of its purported “Axis of Resistance” against Israel and the United States.
