Analyze the Statement of UN sanction monitor Discovery of debris in Kharkiv
According to some latest report, United Nation sanctions monitors gave information to the Security Council committee about the debris. It was found on January 2 in the Ukraine city of Kharkiv that originated from a North Korean Hwasong-11 series ballistic missile.
According to UN sanction monitor “debris recovered from a missile that landed in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on 2 January 2024 derives from a DPRK Hwasong-11 series missile”
North Korea’s Persistent Confrontation with UN Sanctions
Since 2006, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), commonly known as North Korea, has faced relentless UN sanctions due to its pursuit of ballistic missile and nuclear capabilities. These sanctions, initially imposed in response to Pyongyang’s nuclear tests, have undergone consistent reinforcement over the years.
Despite international pressure and diplomatic efforts, North Korea has remained steadfast in advancing its military programs, defying sanctions resolutions. This steadfastness underscores the regime’s prioritization of its strategic objectives over international norms and cooperation.
Moreover, the sanctions have had limited success in curbing North Korea’s military ambitions, as the regime continues to demonstrate resilience and adaptability in circumventing restrictions. The enduring standoff between North Korea and the international community reflects the complex dynamics of power, security, and ideology in Northeast Asia.
At the start of this month 3 sanctions traveled to Ukraine in order to get information about debris. Furthermore, no evidence found that Russia was involved behind the missiles. They could not get any clear information about who was involved behind it and where the missile was launched.
“In their report to the North Korea sanctions committee on April 25th, they stated that according to information from Ukrainian authorities, the trajectory suggests it was launched from within the borders of the Russian Federation.”
Involvement of Russian forces in launching missiles
Analysts suggest that the missile’s presence in the specific location implies potential involvement of Russian forces, indicating possible procurement by Russian nationals and a breach of the North Korea arms embargo since 2006.
The lack of immediate response from the Russian and North Korean missions to the United Nations in New York regarding the report by sanctions monitors adds to the intrigue. It raises questions about reluctance to address the allegations or other underlying factors.
Beyond violating international sanctions, this discovery could strain diplomatic relations between Russia and nations involved in denuclearization efforts with North Korea. It highlights the ongoing challenges in enforcing arms embargoes and preventing illicit proliferation in a complex geopolitical landscape. The international community’s response will likely be closely watched, given its potential implications for regional security and efforts to address North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.
Furthermore, the United States and other countries accused North Korea for this master plan. They sent weapons to Russia for the fighting against Ukraine. This accusation was rejected by Moscow and Pyongyang.
In the February meeting of the United Nation security council US accused Russia for launching ballistic missiles against Ukraine in order to get victory.
According to the UN monitor , in 2019 the public test was done for Hwasong-11 series ballistic missiles.
It is also said that Russia used its veto power for the purpose of yearly extension of the UN sanctions monitoring team. It is commonly known as a panel of experts. The task of this panelis to monitor the implementation of UN sanction on North Korea. It is because this country has had different ballistic missiles programs for the last many years. Consequently, the mandate of the current panel of experts is due to expire on Tuesday.
However, shortly after the attack on January 2nd, the Kharkiv region prosecutor’s office swiftly displayed missile fragments to the media, asserting that they differed from Russian models and suggesting, “this may be a missile which was supplied by North Korea”.
