IUNW Urges UNICEF to Protect Children During COVID19
As COVID19 has been spreading all over the world, causing serious challenges to people as well as governments, many groups became particularly vulnerable to the pandemic which has changed the world in many different ways and affected health systems in an unprecedented manner. One of the most vulnerable groups that has been affected by COVID19 is children in poor countries and conflict zones.
In many parts of the world where the health system is weak as in Africa Eastern Europe and the Middle East, the lives of children especially in conflict zones are at stake. During these challenging times, children at schools and in refugee camps are most likely to get infected. In many parts of the world especially in poor countries, classes are crowded which increases the possibility of spreading the pandemic among children.
The United Nations through its various bodies especially UNICEF holds a moral responsibility towards children during these times. UNICEF should make sure all children in all parts of the world have equal access to healthcare and have an equal protection to save their lives especially in conflict zones. This includes children in refugee camps and war-torn countries who already face many challenges on daily basis.
UNICEF should get more engaged to protect children from the imminent spread of the pandemic in conflict areas and poor countries by engaging with their parents and educators to make sure they have the needed information to protect the children and deal with them in a proper manner. The UN should allocate a larger budget to UNICEF during COVID19 to make sure children are safe and healthy. Children in these countries need access to medical care and protection the most now as they are left vulnerable to conflicts and weak health systems.
IUNW applauds efforts made by UNICEF over the years to protect children in more than 190 countries in the world, yet with current circumstances which saw the spread of the COVID19 virus to almost every single country in the world, more efforts need to be made to protect children particularly in poor countries and conflict zones.
