Key points from the UN Security Council on Ukraine weapons transfers
On Thursday the major topic of discussion in the meeting of the UN Security Council was the transfer of weapons to Ukraine. Russia is the main organizer of this meeting. One of the United Nation officials, Adedeji Ebo, shared the latest updates and casualty numbers with the ambassadors. Ukraine has been receiving many weapons and military aid since June 14. Mr Ebo stated that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.
This invasion from Russia does not follow international laws and also breaks the United Nation Charter. Now the question is what is the major reason that this conflict never ends till now. The ongoing transfer of military aid is the major concern for the United Nation. The situation remains tense and continues to be debated at the highest levels of international diplomacy.
Many military equipment transferred to Ukraine. It includes big things like battle tanks, armored vehicles, and helicopters. Many smaller weapons such as guns and light arms also sent. In transferred material, dangerous items like anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions were also included. The transfer of these equipment makes the situation more tense and serious.
According to his statement, “ In addition, there have been reports of States transferring, or planning to transfer, weapons such as uncrewed aerial vehicles, ballistic missiles and ammunition to the Russian armed forces and that these weapons have been used in Ukraine.”
It is not the wise decision to send the weapons and ammunition to the conflict area. This makes things worsen with the passage of time. It leads to increased conflict between these nations and maybe people use these weapons illegally after the war is over. It is important to follow the international laws and United Nation Security Resolution before transferring weapons. So, in order to make the situation better it is crucial to avoid the transferring of weapons, especially in the troubong areas like Ukraine. In order to rebuild things after conflict, it is also vital to follow international laws.
Recently, countries came together to review their progress on the UN’s Small Arms Programme. They discussed how to stop the illegal trade of small arms and light weapons and agreed on measures to address this issue until 2030. This agreement is a big step forward in controlling the spread of these dangerous weapons. Ensuring that weapons don’t fall into the wrong hands is key to maintaining peace and security. Measures to prevent the diversion of weapons are necessary to avoid further instability and ensure a stable recovery post-conflict. This international cooperation and agreement highlight the importance of strict regulations and concerted efforts to manage and control the distribution of arms worldwide.
The people living in Ukraine are suffering a lot. According to Mr. Ebo and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) report many people lost their lives. Approximately, 11,430 people have died and many have been injured.
These numbers are shocking, but it’s possible the real figures are even higher. In June alone, the OHCHR found that most civilian casualties, about 72%, resulted from artillery shelling, rocket systems, and air strikes.
It simply means that these weapons proved harmful for innocent people and took the lives of many. On the other hand, due to striking missiles, approximately 26% people have been injured. Overall, these figures point out that the situation becomes worse day by day and urgent action is necessary to protect the life of civilians.
This year the higher number of casualties of the children was also pointed out in June.
According to Mr. Adedeji Ebo, “The use of armed uncrewed aerial vehicles and missiles continues to cause civilian deaths and injuries as well as damage to civilian infrastructure.”
Many reports said that Ukraine used these missiles and wear[eons across the Russian border in order to launch strikes.
Russian authorities said these attacks prove harmful for the civilians. Mr. Ebo urged all the parties that become the cause of conflict to stop such action that put innocent people in danger. He said it is the responsibility of the United Nation to bring peace across Ukraine and Russia. For this purpose it is important to keep in mind the international laws and relevant resolutions from the General Assembly.
The goal is to help resolve the conflict while ensuring that the rights and safety of civilians are protected throughout the process.
