IUNW Hails EU Inquiry on HR Activists in ME
The International United Nations Watch (IUNW) commends inquiry made by Fulvio Martusciello MEP to Josep Borrell Fontelles, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the EU Commission about human rights violations resulting from conflicts and wars in the Middle East.
Martusciello noted on his Twitter account that softwares are being used by countries in the Middle East and elsewhere to spy on human rights activists. He noted that the involvement of some countries in conflicts and civil wars in countries like Yemen and Libya is causing growing alarm among critics as concerns spread about their heavy handed imprint on human rights violations in the Middle East region.
He added, "Across the region but especially in Libya, Yemen and Syria, human rights activists have been victimised and silenced as a result of arrests, assassinations, and torture attributed to these repressive regimes. Both countries are employing different technologies to fully monitor any person or entity who is opposing them or this policies in home or around MENA region."
IUNW calls on the European Commission to seriously deal with the issue of providing protection for human rights activists and to make sure governments, which have extensive diplomatic, military and economic deals with the EU, abide by principles of international law and stop their violations against human rights defenders.
