From UNGA to NATO: Rethinking security in a divided world
The 79th United Nations General Assembly meeting did not prove successful in solving global conflicts. This is because it has many complexities within the system that make it less effective. The United Nations Security Council has also received criticism for giving more to a few nations. These countries use their veto power to block any decision.
There is a lot of improvement that is needed at UNGA. Nations have different views on their ideas and politics, which weakened the power of UNGA. To compete for influence, many nations build smaller groups such as BRICS and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.
These groups want more control over global issues, but this only increases division. This makes it harder for the UNGA to bring countries together and solve problems.
The growing multilateralism has brought state actors back into global conflict, the same as the Cold War. However, non-state sectors such as private companies are gaining more power. These companies take part in trade, and technology and contribute to money. In this way, it boosts the economy. While they are also challenging the power of states. Initiatives like the Blue Dot Network and industries such as fintech, semiconductors, and energy are blending state and business interests. Some companies even have more money as compared to the entire county. However, the main focus of these cooperations is not only on making profits. They should also pay attention to sustainability, social responsibility, and environmental goals.
As private companies take on global challenges like climate change and clean energy, they are reducing the control that states once had over these issues. The UNGA can only provide moral guidance, but the real power lies with the UNSC and major global players. These players are the ones who have the biggest role in solving global crises.
Despite the fact that private companies and non-state groups are becoming crucial, nations still have the ability and power to shape worldwide peace and conflict. The only thing that is needed is the adjustment of rules. The nations can set rules to start and stop war. However, in this modern age, nuclear power is increasing, so the old ways to stop the conflict are failing. Updated strategies are needed to prevent nations from starting a war.
The world is divided into competing sides due to the formation of new groups. It includes AUKUS, BRICS, and Quad. Every group has its strengths. It means every nation pays attention to its matters first and ignores global conflicts. This strategy weakened the power of the United Nations. Powerful countries collaborate with other strong nations to stay in power, while weaker nations join them to get protection.
In today’s world, power decides everything, and the most vulnerable countries are at the highest risk, while stronger nations seek to increase their influence.
Due to increasing global instability and unresolved conflicts in the Middle East, Sweden and Finland joined NATO. They observed that nations involved in these crises and even powerful countries are not collaborating to solve the conflicts. Because of this lack of cooperation, Sweden and Finland are threatening their security and rethinking to build new strategies.
To protect their interests, nations always make wise decisions by assessing risks and benefits. In this unstable world, joining NATO is the only way for Sweden and Finland to ensure their safety is assured. However, all countries should follow international laws, respect democracy, and maintain sovereignty. Following all of these principles is necessary to maintain stability. For Sweden and Finland, NATO offers protection and security in this unpredictable global environment.
