Exploring the growing Houthi threats and their impact on regional stability
December was the month when the Houthis launched a series of intense attacks against Israel. These attacks highlight no worries for civilian lives. According to a report, one single attack took the lives of dozens of people at the Tel Aviv playground. These ongoing Houthi threats show increasing safety concerns in the region. Their advanced weaponry system shows the growing danger. Houthi threats in the Red Sea have become intense with time with the support of Iranian-backed militias. They openly celebrate the success of hypersonic missile attacks.
Iran’s support of the Houthis by providing arms supply is a serious violation of international law. In order to stop future escalation, it is the duty of the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action. Furthermore, the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM) should also take steps to prevent illegal arms smuggling.
Bringing peace across the world and preventing further civilian casualties required urgent action from the international community. They should collaborate and work on a single platform to find a solution to a Houthi attack.
The US military force successfully targeted the Iran-backed Houthi command center in Sana’a on December 16, 2024. This place was the key hub utilized for the severe attacks on the United States Navy warships and merchant vessels in the Red Sea.
Many Houthi drones have been successfully destroyed by US forces since December 21. The nation successfully targeted the anti-ship cruise missile over the Red Sea.
These actions of the US were carried out by following international laws and the US’s right to defend itself. They want to make sure regional stability without expressing the US strategy in the Middle East conflict.
At the same time, Israel should also prevent damage to civilian infrastructure. It is the responsibility of Israel’s military cooperation to save civilian lives. Both sides should coordinate with each other to stop the humanitarian crisis and maintain stability in the region.
Recently, an Israeli strike near Sana’a airport highlighted the severe danger. During the attack, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and his team were present on the spot. The Israeli strike highlights the danger faced by humanitarian workers. Dr. Tedros was the representative of the United Nations in Yemen to support critical humanitarian missions.
Despite the growing threats of attacks, the UN and its partners, including WHO, are making efforts to provide health, nutrition, water, and sanitation aid to the people of Yemen.
Houthis should stop their reckless attacks to bring stability to the region. The international community should take immediate action to ensure accountability.
This is yet another defining moment in a very delicate time for the region. Intercontinental cooperation is severely needed to ease tensions, protect humanitarian workers, and provide for those who mostly need aid.
It was less than a year ago that Resolution 2722 was adopted, calling for the Houthis to halt attacks on merchant and commercial vessels immediately. The United States now hopes to extend the reporting period under the Resolution for six more months to ensure continued accuracy and updates of information to the Security Council.
This expanded reporting must provide information about the ballistic missiles and advanced drones that have been utilized in the increasing number of sophisticated attacks. The United States welcomes Japan’s assistance in the formulation of these resolutions and is eagerly awaiting cooperation from the new members of the Council.
Balanced reportage and international cooperation are what are needed to take pertinent effects in dealing with continuing threats and ensuring regional maritime security.
