António Guterres emphasized AI’s ever-present danger
A serious warning on the development of artificial intelligence was put out by UN president António Guterres. To make it possible for humans to quickly regulate matter, AI has been developing more quickly. This ongoing shift raises significant questions regarding responsibility and justice. In various instances of decision-making, it lessens the need for human intervention.
Delays in worldwide implementation of AI rules, he highlighted, increase the risks to all. He is especially interested in the military’s use of artificial intelligence. In contradiction to international humanitarian law, artificial intelligence is being used in military domains of study. It is also dismissive of human rights policy. The basis for this is that AI chooses objectives on its own.
He highlighted that progress in AI should never harm security and peace between different nations. Growing progress in AI requires clear international guidelines. International communities should cooperate and stop the wrong use of AI. Proper steps are needed to save the world from the dangers of AI.
The development of artificial intelligence is associated with both risks and benefits. On one side AI has many positive uses. It can assist in predicting climate-related displacement. Through AI one can find landmines that could save lives. However, in the military and security sectors, its utilization is concerning. Artificial Intelligence is already being tested for many things. It includes surveillance and policing, sometimes making life-or-death decisions. One of the dangerous uses of AI is nuclear weapons and quantum computing.
This use can harm global security. The chief of the United Nations, Mr. Guterres, said that we cannot allow AI to take a human’s life without their permission. He stresses that actions are needed to control the progress of AI so that things are under the control of humans. It is important to carefully handle the solutions provided by AI. In this way, one can overcome dangers that could threaten humanity’s future.
Another sector of worry, said Mr. Guterres, is the role artificial intelligence (AI) plays in the information venue. He highlighted the ways that deepfakes and AI-generated falsehoods may influence public opinion, create crises, and damage social trust. By emphasizing the scarce resources of computing facilities and the geopolitical fight for the essential elements needed for AI technology, he also brought awareness to the risks to the environment related to AI.
To ensure that AI helps everyone and avoids increasing inequality, he stated that
“unprecedented worldwide difficulties call for unparalleled global cooperation.”
The UN Global Digital Compact was ratified at the Summit of the Future, and the General Assembly adopted two significant resolutions on enhancing worldwide collaboration and capacity-building, in addition to recent attempts toward building global governance for AI, as Mr. Guterres highlighted. The General Assembly is expected to consider a third resolution in the coming days that will concentrate on the use of AI in the military.
As he finished off his speech, Mr. Guterres reiterated his demand that lethal autonomous weapons be banned and encouraged the Security Council to set an example by stopping militarizing the use of AI in ways that endanger global peace and security.
“I invite everyone to work collectively to bring about a safe, private, and diverse AI future.”
