Violence in Darfur: UNSC should help the ICC in finding innovative solution

by Analysis Desk August 20, 2024 0 Comment

Recently, the ICC prosecutor pointed out the complex situation in Darfur, Sudan. This region is suffering from the troubling conditions right now. For the last 6 months, Darfur has endured severe suffering and hardship.  Karim Khan, the prosecutor, described this period as one of continuous misery and torment for the people living there.

He also said that the situation becomes severe day by day and there is no sign of ending this violence. According to Khan, it is the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council to come there and find the effective solution of these crises. According to him, the UN Security Council should suggest innovative ways that bring peace in this region and also relief for all those who are suffering. The situation in Darfur, Sudan needs immediate action to improve the lives of people. Also the instant decision is required to end the ongoing turmoil.

The report that labels the situation in Darfur as a “profound human tragedy” truly points out the crisis of nature that is severe.

Khan has noted that the situation has deteriorated significantly over the past six months, with a disturbing increase in reports of rape and crimes against children and other vulnerable civilians.

He is prioritizing these serious allegations because such crimes have historically had the most devastating impact on the most defenseless members of society.

Darfur region is known as a very bleak place. Despite this Khan finds out there is some sign of progress shown in the report. The International Criminal Court( ICC) starts the investigation in order to get knowledge about the people who are “aiding and abetting” those causing the conflicts in the region. This step from the ICC plays an important role to find the exact solution of the crisis,  even though the challenges remain substantial.

Khan stated, “I hope, by my next report, I will be able to announce applications for warrants of arrest regarding those, or some of those individuals that are the most responsible for what we’re seeing at the moment.”

The real focus of Khan is to find the solution rather than wasting time on pointless debate. According to Khan the International Criminal Court is not just the place for discussing problems or talk shops. According to Khan, the ICC has never been a simple solution or “silver bullet” for the world’s complex crises.

According to his views, it is the duty of the members of the United Nations to strongly support the ICC in order to find effective solutions. He emphasizes that the court deserves substantial backing from the UN Security Council. Furthermore, Khan also suggests that more innovative and creative ways are necessary to find the real solutions.

Khan is also urging that in order to bring peace across the region, effective strategies are compulsory. The purpose of these strategies is to solve the conflict without any further disaster.

The situation in that part of the continent is very severe. Khan also warned about reaching the tipping point. According to him, if the situation is not handled properly then there are many issues such as, ethnic, racial, religious, and commercial conflicts could explode. So, it is clear from the report that Sudan needs special attention to solve the matter carefully. Additionally, the conflicting sides in Sudan need to cooperate more to address the crisis. By comparison with other regions, the situation in Darfur is very complex. This place needs a special focus to save the lives of people.

The war in Sudan, which started in April 2023 between Army General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has led to a dire humanitarian crisis. Their disagreement over integrating the RSF into the army has resulted in nearly 16,000 deaths and millions of displaced people.
