United Kingdom arms sales to Israel: Ethical questions

by Analysis Desk August 17, 2024 0 Comment

Many nations claimed that the United Kingdom secretly sold weapons to Israel. These weapons are used in the ongoing Gaza conflict that caused many deaths and injuries.  But the British government denies this claim. According to the government statement, there has been no change in the policy related to arms export licenses to Israel.

The method for checking these licenses remains the same. Each application is being reviewed carefully according to the Strategic Export Licensing Criteria. This deep checking clearly highlights that all applications are evaluated fairly and thoroughly.

Government spokesperson also emphasized that the process of reviewing the application is continuing. And still there are no changes related to these exports have been made.

The review aims to ensure compliance with existing regulations and policies, and any updates or decisions will be communicated once the review is complete.

This statement is meant to clarify that, despite ongoing discussions and assessments, the British government’s stance on arms exports has not altered, and they continue to follow their standard procedures for evaluating and issuing export licenses. This position aims to address and dispel any confusion or misconceptions about recent reports.

Many people discussed a lot about the “ secret arms embargo” on Israel. David Lammy, the Foreign Minister of the UK said, they will deeply review whether arms sales to Israel fulfill the international laws or not. Also said after deep findings, they will inform the parliament about their findings.

Recently, the Daily Mail reported that the new Labour Party government might have quietly stopped new arms export licenses to Israel. This clearly highlights that they could change their policy. This is because they are concerned about Israel’s actions.

According to the latest report,  the government might push back its plan to fully ban arms export licenses to Israel. It was meant to discuss the complexities related to war crimes, until the summer season ends. This delay may have a great impact on the query that when and why the policy change takes place?

It is very worrying that the UK is the nation that continues to issue export licenses for arms to Israel. Also the officials ignored that these actions are clearly against the international laws. Many human rights organizations criticized the UK for selling weapons to Israel. According to these organizations, these sales lead to increased conflict. As weapons play an important role in deaths and injuries. Also these sales clearly highlight that the UK strongly supports Israel’s action in the Gaza war. This support also breaches many international rules.

Since Israel launched its offensive on Gaza last October 7, the UK has approved over 100 licenses for arms and military equipment to be sold to Israel. As of May, there were 345 active licenses for these types of sales. This persistent support seems to contradict the UK’s stated commitment to upholding international humanitarian standards and raises significant ethical questions about the country’s role in the ongoing conflict.

Recently the UN Security Council called for an immediate ceasefire. But Israel refused to obey the decision of the UN. This refusal of Israel faced many criticism and also claimed that this nation broke international laws. On October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel. After this attack, Israel’s action in Gaza became cruel day-by-day.

Also this harsh behavior of Israel took the lives of many people.  At this time, Gaza is devastated. Also Plaestinians suffer from many complexities such as shortage of food and many basic necessities. It includes clean water and medicine. The International Court of Justice said that Isreal is the root cause of genocide also announced that Isreal should stop its military operations in Rafah.

This city had become a shelter for over a million Palestinians fleeing the violence before it was invaded on May 6.
